Roomorama: Finding Your Home Away From Home

November 15, 2010

It’s interesting where one tweet can get you. Sometimes you’ll find out about the next greatest music video, the hottest new cocktail or maybe even a job interview. Well when Eric sent out a tweet months ago about couch surfing, @Roomorama was there to reply and offer a much more comfortable solution.

Roomorama is a site for short or even possibly long stay apartments. Those looking to rent a space create a profile, list their property and provide nightly or weekly rates. You can also see how many times the space has been booked, and read reviews on the space as well.

While we were browsing for a place in Berlin, prices were extremely affordable and it almost looked too good to be true. So we tweeted right back to @Roomorama to learn more about this service. They were quick to respond which was a great sign that there was a someone out there looking out for us, so we decided to give it a try. So how did it go? Let me give you the pros and cons of Roomorama.

•Great selection of spaces with a price for everyone
•Lists out amenities for each space
•You communicate with the host only through Roomorama until you are sure you want to book
•You pay by credit card through Roomorama and are only charged when you check in

•Very small community so there are few reviews
•Many apartments require a large security deposit that is paid to the host in cash (we worked with our host so we didn’t have to put down a deposit)
•There was a fee attached to the nightly rate
•Upon arrival our host needed a 20 euro cleaning fee that was not mentioned up front

In the end, we paid a total 192 euros of which breaks down to under 13 euro a night per person. A wonderful deal for the beautiful space we had for 5 nights.

Traveling for two months is the experience of a lifetime, but every now and then it is important to give yourself a break from the noise, food and noisy bunk bed sex from across the room that comes along with hostel living. If you are traveling and are looking for a home away from home, check out or even better reach out to them on twitter @Roomorama and start up a conversation. You might just find yourself feeling a bit like Cameron Diaz or Kate Winslet.
